The Jam Haven Mexico Program

The Jam Haven Mexico program is centered on techniques that any musician can use to improvise and "jam" with other musicians. These techniques include duet and ensemble song forms from World Music such as:

  • Solo / Drone
  • Two chord vamps
  • Twelve-bar blues
  • Playing with a singer
  • Traveling duets and trios
  • Solo / Ostinato
  • Rounds
  • Shadowing and Contrast
  • Story Telling
  • Basic Singing support techniques
  • Playing with guitarists and percussion
  • and Mixed Media forms such combining music with poetry or movement.

These simple techniques let participants jam and perform successfully in any setting, with a minimum of detailed preparation.

In addition, we explore specific topics in:

  • Stagecraft
  • Using an Electronic WindSynth
  • World Rhythms
  • Alternate Scales
  • Music Practice techniques

What to Bring

To keep things simple, we often work in a few keys: Am and Em and their corresponding major keys C and G. This means that Native Flute players can simply pack an A flute and an E flute and you'll be set for the week.

If you do not have an A flute, we do have some well-tuned A flutes to loan. They are made of sanitized, food-grade ABS plastic, made by Rich Dubé of Northern Spirit flutes in Canada.
